2024 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Overview

Undoubtedly, when we visualize the epitome of luxury sedans, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class instantly comes to mind. Serving as the brand's flagship for decades, it consistently delivers state-of-the-art technology and top-tier comfort. Whether reclining in the spacious rear seat of the Sonderklasse or navigating the elegantly designed land yacht through the streets, passengers experience a leather-clad interior adorned with numerous large screens—albeit with an abundance of touch controls. Despite some features being overly intricate, the S-Class boasts a trio of distinctive all-wheel-drive powertrains. The S500 features a smooth 429-hp turbocharged straight-six, while the S580 is equipped with a robust twin-turbo V-8 producing 496 horsepower. The S580e plug-in hybrid combines the turbo six with an electric motor. Although the V-8-powered S580 exhibits slightly quicker performance, it falls short of the PHEV's fuel efficiency, which includes an impressive 58 miles of electric-only highway range. Regardless of the engine specifications, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz S-Class excels in both handling and ride comfort. While other luxury sedans like the BMW 7-Series and Genesis G90 share similar characteristics, none quite capture the enduring allure of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Features :

1. Engine & Power :

Mercedes provides the S-Class sedan with two formidable engine options: a 429-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine for the S500 and a 496-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 for the S580. Both powertrains integrate a 48-volt hybrid system, pair with a nine-speed automatic transmission, and feature 4Matic all-wheel drive. The S580e plug-in hybrid variant combines an inline-six with an electric motor, producing a robust 510 horsepower, and also comes standard with all-wheel drive.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the luxury of the S-Class sedan, we conducted tests on each model, and all demonstrated impressive acceleration. On our test track, the six-cylinder S500 achieved 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, the plug-in-hybrid S580e accomplished it in 4.2 seconds, and the V-8–powered S580 achieved an impressive 3.9-second time.

While every S-Class benefits from an air suspension, the optional E-Active Body Control introduces a "curve" function, subtly leaning the car into corners. Additionally, the S-Class offers an optional all-wheel steering system, enhancing maneuverability in tight spaces and making the substantial Mercedes surprisingly easy to navigate.

2. Fuel Economy :

According to the EPA, the S580e is expected to have an electric range of 46 miles, providing a substantial electric-only driving capability before its inline-six engine engages. However, our range test revealed an impressive 58 miles, surpassing any previously tested PHEV as of 2023 by 14 miles. Standard with a 9.6-kW onboard charger, the S580e can efficiently charge its 22.7-kWh battery at home. For faster charging at public stations, it's advisable to opt for the optional 60-kW DC charger.

As for fuel efficiency, the six-cylinder S500 is rated at 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Opting for the V-8-powered S580 reduces these estimates to 16 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

3. Interior & Comfort :

Internally, the S-Class places a strong emphasis on screens, featuring a multitude of them—up to five, to be exact. This includes a sizable central touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The latter collaborates with other technological elements to produce a three-dimensional effect, which can be deactivated for a more traditional display if desired. Complementing this array is an advanced head-up display that incorporates augmented reality for navigation directions, where real-time moving and turning arrows aim to enhance driver assistance.

The interior's construction and materials align with Mercedes' high-end standards, ensuring a luxurious atmosphere. The sedan offers opulent accommodations akin to a limousine, particularly for rear passengers. The updated model introduces a rear-seat area with slightly increased headroom and legroom. For added comfort, it can be equipped with power-adjustable reclining seats featuring massage functions and extensive heating elements. In terms of entertainment, occupants in the rear are treated to an optional rear-seat entertainment system, featuring two 11.6-inch screens on the front seatbacks and interactive LED interior lighting for a captivating experience.

4. Technology :

A state-of-the-art infotainment system has become a defining feature of contemporary luxury vehicles, and Mercedes upholds this standard with its latest and most advanced interface. The sedan's central control area is dominated by an expansive 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen oriented vertically. Absent is a touchpad or rotary controller, but in their place is an upgraded version of Mercedes' MBUX software. This enhanced software boasts improved voice-command capabilities and smartphone-like features, including facial recognition and fingerprint scanning. Standard amenities include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as wireless charging. Despite its impressive aesthetics and rich feature set, the system can be intricate, requiring multiple screen touches to access certain functions.

Adding to the audio experience, the S-Class sedan comes equipped with a standard Burmester 3D sound system. For those seeking an even more powerful option, a Burmester 4D stereo is available as an upgrade.

What’s new in 2024?

The S-Class lineup remains largely unchanged for the 2024 model year, with no significant updates or modifications.

Which model do we recommend?

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is priced starting at $118,450, and the cost can increase to $129,300 based on the selected trim and optional features. In your opinion, the ultimate luxury comes in the form of a powerful engine, leading you to consider paying extra for the top-spec 496-hp V-8 and the more prestigious S580 trunk-lid badge.

Potential Competitors :

While we hold the opinion that the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the top contender in its class, there are several other full-size luxury sedans worth considering. The BMW 7 Series, Genesis G90, and Lexus LS all stand as competent flagships in their own right, offering alternatives for those seeking luxury and performance in the full-size sedan segment.

Conclusion :

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class boasts a multitude of pros that contribute to its appeal. Its engines strike a harmonious balance between power and efficiency, delivering a robust performance. The interior seamlessly combines traditional opulence with state-of-the-art technology, creating a luxurious ambiance. The cabin is impressively silent and comfortable, offering a serene driving experience. The addition of rear-wheel steering enhances low-speed maneuverability, adding a notable advantage. However, there are some drawbacks to consider, such as certain driver assist options that may raise questions about their value and a relatively small trunk. In terms of updates, the introduction of the plug-in hybrid S 580e model expands the lineup, and new paint and interior colors provide additional customization options. The 2021 model belongs to the seventh generation of the S-Class, underlining its continuous evolution.
