2023 Toyota Corolla Overview

The Toyota Corolla 12th generation combines remarkable fuel efficiency and a plethora of standard safety features in a little car that appears considerably more thrilling than it is to drive. The most powerful Corolla gets a four-cylinder engine with 169 horsepower, which is insufficient to propel the car forward. Other small cars, such as the Honda Civic and Mazda 3, are more agile, responsive, and peppy, making them far more enjoyable to drive. The Corolla distinguishes itself from other compacts by offering a wide choice of variants. The Corolla is available as a sedan or hatchback, and it also comes with an extraordinarily fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain with front- or all-wheel drive. Adults can fit comfortably in the back seats, making the Toyota Corolla an economical new automobile for anyone in need of a dependable people mover. Driving the Corolla may hardly blow your socks off, but its efficiency and elegance will.

Modifications For 2023

Toyota updates the Corolla with new trim levels and powertrains for 2023. SE and XLE trim levels are now available for Corolla Hybrid cars, and all-wheel drive is now available for Hybrid SE and LE trims. The 169-hp 2.0-liter replaces the 139-hp 1.8-liter found in the L, LE, and XLE grades. Unfortunately, Toyota has dropped the optional six-speed manual transmission for 2023, adding the Corolla to the mountain of cars that only come with an automatic transmission. A new 8.0-inch infotainment screen replaces smaller screens as standard equipment on all Corollas. The 7.0-inch gauge cluster on the XSE and XLE has been revamped, while the 4.2-inch cluster on all models has been upgraded. Minor cosmetic changes include LED daytime running lights and redesigned headlights for the SE, XSE, and XLE trims. A redesigned rear diffuser and 18-inch gloss Graphite wheels are also available for the SE and XSE variants. Corolla hatchbacks sport a new grille, LED headlights, and a chrome-accented rear bumper. The Nightshade and Apex trims are no longer available. Finally, the base L trim is no longer available, making LE models the new entry-level Corolla.

Which Trim To Purchase

We'd go with the sporty-looking SE sedan, along with a tauter suspension that makes it more enjoyable to drive than the standard setup. The Corolla SE sedan continues to come standard with lots of amenities to keep us happy. LED headlights, 18-inch wheels, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, front sport seats, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are among the features.

Power & Performance

The engine of the 2023 Toyota Corolla is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic gearbox (CVT) are standard. This engine propels the Corolla around town with adequate vigor, and it has enough pep to keep up with traffic, but reaching highway speeds or passing other vehicles requires patience, and the CVT causes the engine to groan noisily under hard acceleration. The acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes around nine seconds. Overall, this arrangement is adequate for daily driving but not inspiring.

The GR Corolla is a whole other beast. It has a turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque (295 pound-feet for Morizo variants), a six-speed manual transmission, and all-wheel drive. Because of the swift and accurate gearbox, this turbocharged triple is a delight to wring out. The engine sounds zingy, revs promptly and cleanly, and delivers power in a linear way. There is some turbo lag, but it appears to be a character characteristic rather than a defect. The AWD technology also delivers tenacious grip, allowing the GR Corolla to reach 60 mph in 4.9 seconds.

Fuel Economy

In its most frugal models (the LE sedan and SE hatchback), the 2023 Toyota Corolla earns an EPA-estimated 32 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway, which is excellent for a tiny car. The SE and XSE sedans are estimated to get 31/40 mpg city/highway, while the XSE hatchback gets 30/38 mpg.

The GR Corolla is at the other extreme of the fuel economy scale. It gets 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the interstate.

Interior & Comfort

The inside of the 2023 Toyota Corolla is clean-cut, with several cushioned surfaces and soft-touch plastics throughout; however, hard plastics tend to fill out-of-sight regions. Overall, the cabin seems strong and well-constructed, and it does a good job of muffling road and wind noise. It's fine overall, but it lacks the upmarket feel of competitors like the Honda Civic, Mazda3, or even the Hyundai Elantra.

The trunk space of the sedan is 13.1 cubic feet. That's somewhat less than normal for a tiny car, but there's still plenty of capacity for shopping bags or carry-on baggage, and the back seats can be folded to accommodate large things. The Corolla hatchback has 17.8 cubic feet of capacity, and its large liftgate opening makes loading and unloading bulkier objects easier. When the rear seats are folded, the Corolla hatchback has enough space to carry a bike.

Infotainment

Toyota has democratized the Corolla's infotainment options for 2023, with all models now using the same 8-inch touch screen. This tablet-like display is prominently mounted in the center of the dashboard, making it easy to see and reach, and it features Toyota's latest infotainment software. The picture is sharp, the reactions are quick, and the menus are simple to use. The majority of functionality is accessible via shortcut icons on the left side of the screen. You may even instruct the virtual assistant to make changes for you (simply say, "Hey Toyota").

The dashboard of the 2023 Toyota Corolla contains a few physical controls, such as volume and air conditioning knobs and buttons, which make it easier to modify these functions while driving.

Safety

The whole Toyota Corolla series also has a slew of standard driver-assistance features, such as automatic high lights and traffic sign assist.

Visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites for further information on the Corolla's crash-test performance. The following are important safety features:

Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking are standard features.

Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assistance are standard.

Adaptive cruise control is standard.

Warranty & Coverage For Maintenance

Toyota offers a competitive warranty on the Corolla, which includes comprehensive regular maintenance. However, competitors such as the Hyundai Elantra and the Kia Forte provide much longer powertrain warranties of up to ten years or 100,000 miles.

Three years, or 36,000 miles, is the length of the limited warranty.

The powertrain warranty is valid for five years or 60,000 miles.

The warranty for hybrid components is eight years or 100,000 miles.

Free maintenance is provided for two years, or 25,000 miles.

Other Competitive Cars

Toyota Corolla vs. Toyota Camry

Because the Toyota Camry is a midsize sedan, it has a few advantages over the compact Corolla. The Camry has more interior space, a larger trunk, and a few additional optional options, such as a head-up display, a surround-view parking camera system, and ventilated seats. The Camry, on the other hand, isn't quite as fuel-efficient, and its starting price is around $4,400 higher than the Corolla's. If you're on a limited budget, the Toyota Corolla is the way to go. The Camry, on the other hand, is a more spacious sedan for family transport.

Toyota Corolla vs. Honda Civic

The Honda Civic feels more upscale than the Toyota Corolla. The Civic's interior is noticeably more luxurious, with additional seating and cargo space. The Civic also outperforms the new GR Corolla in terms of engine performance and handling, while its Type R variant is a close second. Both models are notable for being available in sedan and hatchback body styles. The Civic is the superior overall car, but the Corolla is a better value: its starting price is nearly $3,100 less.
