2024 Volvo S60 Overview

The 2024 Volvo S60 stands as the more compact and budget-friendly option among the two sedans offered by the Swedish automaker. It comes in both mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, and for those inclined towards a wagon, Volvo provides a V60 variant with similar attributes. The sedan boasts an attractive exterior that complements its minimalist interior, adorned with elegant materials and exceptionally comfortable seats. The only drawback is the limited cubby storage, leaving room for improvement.

The S60's standard 247-horsepower turbo four engine may not leave a lasting impression, available with either front- or all-wheel drive. On the other hand, the plug-in hybrid powertrain is more enticing, delivering a substantial 456-horsepower output, standard all-wheel drive, and an EPA-estimated 41 miles of electric-only range. Upholding Volvo's commitment to safety, every 2024 S60 comes equipped with a range of standard driver assistance features, and all models include sought-after and popular amenities.

Features :

1. Engine & Power :

In its nonhybrid form, the S60 features a 247-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine available with either front- or all-wheel drive. The power ramps up significantly to 456 horsepower in the all-wheel-drive-exclusive Recharge plug-in hybrid model. While the S60 demonstrated commendable over-the-road capabilities, we found that it fell short in establishing a strong connection between the driver, the car, and the road, particularly lacking the precise steering feel characteristic of top-tier sports sedans. Nonetheless, it managed an impressive 0-60 mph time of 6.4 seconds.

2. Fuel Economy :

The nonhybrid S60 achieves a fuel efficiency rating of up to 26 mpg in city driving and 35 mpg on the highway. In contrast, the plug-in-hybrid variant boasts an estimated 74 MPGe (Miles Per Gallon Equivalent) and an electric-only drive range extending up to 41 miles.

3. Interior & Comfort :

Volvo proudly showcases the exceptional build quality within the S60, offering a luxurious interior adorned with high-end materials and an unparalleled commitment to detail. The design exudes forward-thinking elegance, featuring distinctive touches like jeweled switchgear and exceptionally comfortable seats. Deluxe amenities abound, including a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, ambient interior lighting, a head-up display, massaging front seats, and more. The front-seat passengers enjoy the embrace of cozy and supportive buckets, while rear-seat occupants benefit from ample legroom and headroom.

The interior's practicality is accentuated by useful door pockets and a center console equipped with a tray featuring a retractable cover and a convenient bin beneath the armrest. Unfortunately, despite these thoughtful storage solutions, there's a limitation in available space in these storage areas.

4. Technology :

The S60 comes equipped with a tablet-style infotainment system that utilizes a Google-based interface. The system incorporates a native voice assistant, which performs effectively, and notable features include a physical home button positioned at the bottom of the screen and a generously sized volume knob located just below it. One notable drawback, shared with several other systems, is the absence of a tuning knob. Standard features are anticipated to include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, with an optional offering of the premium Bowers & Wilkins audio system.

What’s new in 2024?

In 2024, the S60 lineup maintains its stability with no substantial changes. Minor updates include the introduction of a new Vapour Grey metallic paint, with the discontinuation of the Black Stone option. The "Dark" exterior theme is now a standard feature throughout the model line. On front-drive models, the Climate package incorporates heated rear seats, while the mid-level Plus trim now includes a standard air purifier. The top-tier Ultimate trim is exclusively available with all-wheel drive. Unfortunately, the performance-oriented Polestar Engineered plug-in-hybrid model has been removed from the 2024 S60 offerings.

Which model do we recommend?

While the base trim offers a well-equipped package, we believe it's worthwhile to consider stretching to the midlevel Plus trim. This upgraded trim enhances the features of the Core trim, making daily drives more enjoyable with additions like leather upholstery, a cabin air purifier, and extra safety features such as adaptive cruise control and lane-centering, contributing to reduced stress during long drives. The inclusion of a surround-view camera and front and rear parking sensors further facilitates easier parking maneuvers.

Potential Competitors :

The compact luxury sedan segment presents a plethora of options, featuring well-established benchmarks such as the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Additionally, more budget-friendly alternatives like the Cadillac CT4 and Genesis G70 are available. These competitors generally prioritize sharper handling compared to the S60, with the Mercedes emphasizing its luxury roots over a performance pedigree. The S60 aligns more closely with the comfort-oriented Lexus IS 350. Notably, the S60 gains an advantage with its optional plug-in hybrid, standing out as the sole contender with a rechargeable option in competition with BMW.

Conclusion :

The 2024 Volvo S60 boasts a range of notable features. On the positive side, its seats stand out for their exceptional comfort and support, providing an enjoyable driving experience. The available plug-in hybrid model impresses with both its powerful performance and commendable electric range. For those seeking an enhanced audio experience, the optional Bowers & Wilkins audio system delivers an excellent sound quality. However, there are drawbacks to consider, such as the frustrating touchscreen interface and a smaller trunk space compared to many rivals. In terms of updates, the high-performance Polestar Engineered model has been discontinued, and the dark appearance theme is now a standard feature. Additionally, heated seats have been incorporated into the Climate package. This model is part of the third S60 generation, initially introduced in 2019.
